New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
