FromSoftware's Rolling Dodge Deserves Recognition

For those who have experienced the popular action RPG, or nearly any 3D action game, you're probably acquainted with the fantastic technique referred to as the “dodge roll.” This evasion technique lets your avatar to perform a forward, sideways, or backward ground roll to dodge any enemy attacks and move away from the bad guy. Seems useful, right?

This rolling move, nevertheless, has attracted significant backlash, and not only as a result of the somersault; some have dubbed it dumb, a cop-out, and an unbelievable technique — and occasionally, I agree. You should see me rolling around local Doppler gangs in a well-known fantasy game — they can't hit me! But this game's rolling dodge is the dodge roll to surpass every other evasion moves, and I'll tell you why.

Regarding this title, the designers identified a great way to address all opinions claiming the maneuver is overly simple: simply give each opponent excessive power, increase it further, and all heroes who dares come near them will be eternally grateful because of their evasion move, I'm no exception. When the stakes are this high, evading successfully comes across as a triumph, instead of an unfair advantage.

No alternative avoidance technique in Elden Ring matches this level of gratification and reliability, because swift moves provide minimal movement and defensive postures get quickly shattered by powerful foes. A person once suggested leaping as the primary game avoidance strategy, but in addition to lacking optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me receiving a fatal blow might boost my prospects of beating enemies (skill issue, perhaps).

Mastering the Technique

But even though the dodge roll grants reprieve in a famously difficult title, it isn't without skill. Firstly, Elden Ring's rolling dodge only triggers a frame of protection once you stop pressing the dodge button, which hinders a hasty, frantic retreat from perilous circumstances. Furthermore, while it might transport you away from opponents, it's far more effective to use it as an opportunity to get closer, ideally to their rear, and deliver attacks. In conclusion, you must still grasp and foresee foe assaults, since evading too early of a long charging animation might terminate your protection before the blow lands… which will seriously hurt.

A Balanced Mechanic

Even though rolling-dodging in fast repetition could appear somewhat silly (credit to Geralt once more), this isn't really an option in the game. Certainly, that fails to transform it into a believable combat move — the very cause why it would be pure horror to see it in a game like a realism-focused RPG — but this is a spectacular magical game we're talking about, thus why worry?

Like any proper evasion move, this title's evasion sequence is enhanced with a small acrobatic jump at the start, giving it an energetic feel as opposed to placing the avatar onto the ground. Depending on your gear, the technique may seem incredibly quick or relatively slow, yet it's always swifter and more seamless than the rolling dodges featured in the previous titles. True, you will stick your big blade into the ground when wielding such equipment, but that's on you for failing to use a crossbow (In jest — avoid using the game with a crossbow).

The Perfect Balance

The game's evasion system creates the perfect balance between difficulty and chance, providing prospects of success while risking the loss of that hope at the tiniest misstep. Learn this skill, and you'll gain not just victory, but fulfillment.
