At least thirteen individuals perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
